How to spot storm damage on your Wimbledon roof
UK storms are getting more frequent and more intense. Even a "minor" storm can cause hidden roof damage that, left untreated, leads to leaks and costly repairs. Here's how to check yours safely.
What to look for from ground level
You don't need to climb on the roof. Stand in your garden or across the street and look up:
- Slipped, missing or visibly displaced tiles or slates
- Sagging in the ridge line (should be straight)
- Debris in the gutter (bits of tile, mortar)
- Visible flashings or chimney pots out of place
- Water staining on external walls
What to check inside
Go into the loft with a torch:
- Damp insulation
- Daylight visible through the roof
- Water staining on rafters or underside of felt
- Drip marks or fresh water trails
What to do if you spot damage
Don't attempt DIY repairs on a storm-damaged roof. Photograph everything for your insurer and call a qualified roofer. If water is coming in, contain it with buckets and towels.
