How to handle an insurance claim for roof damage

· 1 min read

After storm damage, the insurance claim process can feel overwhelming. With the right order of operations, it's manageable — and we help our customers through it.

The right order of operations

  1. Make safe first. Call a roofer for emergency make-safe (tarping, temporary repairs). Your insurer will typically reimburse this cost.
  2. Document everything. Photos, video, dated notes, weather reports.
  3. Notify your insurer within their time window (usually 30-60 days, but check your policy).
  4. Get a written quote from a qualified roofer with detailed scope of work.
  5. Submit the claim with documentation.

What insurance typically covers

  • Storm damage (wind, rain, hail)
  • Fallen trees or branches
  • Sudden leaks from storm damage
  • Internal damage from water ingress
  • Emergency make-safe costs

What insurance typically does NOT cover

  • Pre-existing wear and tear
  • Gradual leaks from lack of maintenance
  • Cosmetic-only damage
  • Improvements beyond the original state (unless you pay the difference)

Working with the assessor

Most insurers send an assessor. Be present if possible. Have your documentation ready. A roofer who attends with you can speak to the technical details.

We attend insurance assessments with our customers across Wimbledon and South London as a standard part of our service.
